Read: Matthew 26:1-16

Devotional

In Matthew 26, we see two strikingly different responses to Jesus; one of betrayal and one of belonging. Judas Iscariot agrees to hand Jesus over for thirty pieces of silver, the price of a common slave. Meanwhile, a woman breaks an alabaster jar and anoints Jesus with pure nard, a fragrant oil worth 300 denarii; nearly a year’s wages and significantly more valuable than the sum obtained by the betrayer.

Judas, though he had walked with Jesus, witnessed His miracles, and heard His teachings; he seemingly valued his personal gain over his Savior. His betrayal was cold, calculated, and driven by greed. In contrast, the woman’s act was extravagant, heartfelt, and motivated by love. Where Judas sought to gain from Jesus; she sought to give her best to Him.

The stark contrast between these two individuals challenges us to examine our own hearts. Do we approach Jesus with a transactional mindset, seeking what we can gain? Or do we pour out our lives before Him in worship, holding nothing back? Are your more like Judas, or are do you belong to Jesus?

Jesus declared, "Wherever this gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her." (Matthew 26:13). Both actions were memorable and inscripturated for a reason; the fragrance of her sacrifice lingers, while Judas’ betrayal remains a grim warning that no man can serve two masters!

True worship can be costly. It requires surrender, love, and a willingness to give Jesus our very best. No offering is wasted; may our lives be a fragrant offering, pouring out love for the One who poured out everything for us on the cross.

Prayer: Lord, empower me to love You extravagantly, to give my best in worship, and to never trade my devotion for lesser things.
